The Gentle Giant

When I look down at pictures of our beautiful blue planet and think of the distruction that us humans have caused, my thoughts went out to all the creatures in the sea. That gave me the idea for the Blue Whale sculpture, as with all life on the planet each and every whale is slightly different and individual. We take so much from the sea and give little back. The whale was carved from lime wood, then gesso’d and hand painted, it stands on a black oak base, I named the sculpture “The Gentle Giant”.

The Blue Whale’s heart is the biggest on the planet, the whale can grow over 100 ft. long, these magnificent marine mammals, weighing upto 200 tonnes, they weigh as much as thirty elephants and are pretty fast in the water, they can live around 100 years but the average lifespan is around 80 to 90 years.
